If you prefer a non-chemical insect repellent, reviews say Repel Lemon Eucalyptus is a solid option. In most tests, it's effective against mosquitoes and ticks for six to seven hours. However, it's not equally effective… for everyone, and it's supposed to be applied only twice a day. Unlike DEET, oil of lemon eucalyptus doesn't damage plastics or synthetics, but it can stain leather. Most reviewers, but not all, like this product's scent and feel. One thing to note: Mosquito repellents containing oil of lemon eucalyptus are not recommended for kids under 3 years of age.

I would recommend using essential oils such as peppermint, lavender, or a mix of oils that is specifically for insect repelling. One is Purification - see under essential oils tab: https://www.youngliving.org/herbarium

Most insect repellants contain DEET which is harmful to people also and should never be used on children or pets. Others contain mineral oil and other ingredients which also are not healthy.

For mosquitos - people who eat sugar and/or bananas seem to attract them more so avoid those things at least during mosquito season.
