What's the best book, or DVD, to learn about wine for beginners?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The DVD Wine For the Confused with John Cleese is great. It's straightforward, unpretentious, and funny. It may be hard to find, but is available through Netflix and has previously run on the Food Network.

I also own a copy of a small paperback called Simply Wine by Heidi Yorkshire. It's just over 100 pages and goes over the basics. Also, she has a really neat faux wine tasting experiment where different combinations of tea, sugar, lemon and cream are used to demonstrate some of the properties of wine.

I really like The Wine Bible by Karen MacNeil. It is a big, thick, book with accessible writing on everything to do with wine. I like how she has sections on all of the world's wine producing regions, and has lots of interesting tid bits of facts. It isn't the kind of book you'd pick up and read through from cover to cover, but more of a reference if you want to learn more about a certain wine you tried at a restaurant or if you want to know how to choose a wine for Chile, for instance. I've learned a lot from this book.

For super newbies, I recommend watching Alexander Payne's film "Sideways". Over the course of the film you cannot help but learn a few wonderful things about wine from characters who are truly passionate about it. Also, the movie's website even has its own wine club, wine guide and tasting tips. You can follow and drink along.

Wine for Dummies taught me years ago and is still a fun way to learn.
