They don't explain in the movie, but in the book ''Interview with the Vampire'' the author Anne Rice explains that if the body is dead, the death can affect the vampire. So, Anne Rice's vampires have to always drink blood from something that is alive. ''The Vampire LeStat'' lives on animals' blood for a time, as do some of the vampires in ''Twilight''.
