What's Should Be San Antonio's Next Move?

The San Antonio Spurs exceeded everyone’s expectations by beating the Dallas Mavericks, but they just finished getting swept Phoenix Suns. For the Spurs to continue to contend for a championship they’ll have to make some moves. What should those moves be? Should they try and trade Tony Parker or Manu Ginobili? Is Tim Duncan still untouchable? Would Tony Parker and George Hill for Chris Bosh be enough in a sign and trade scenario?

If the San Antonio Spurs truly want to make a big splash and improve their team as well, I think they should look at trading Tim Duncan and get some other pieces in return. While he’s still a very good NBA center his numbers have started to decline a little bit, and he is no longer the young phenom he once was. Still, his name carries quite a bit of value, and the right team, looking for a center who can both rebound, block shots, and score would most likely be more than willing to go get Duncan for the right price.

It could even be draft picks, but whatever the price, Duncan might need to see the end of his San Antonio days. This move of course would have to be something that brought back some real value, as Duncan has pretty much been the face of the franchise since David Robinson left, but it appears to me that the Spurs have become sort of stagnant with their current roster.

Overall the San Antonio Spurs have a decent performance on the 2009 - 2010 NBA regular season. Although they finished the regular season sitting at seventh place they played real big in the first round by repulsing the luckless Western Conference second seeded team Dallas Mavericks. The Spurs edged out the Mavs 4-2, winning big in Games 2,3,4 and 6 to enter the next phase of the playoffs.
In the Western Conference semifinals, however, they absorbed a numbing 0-4 drubbing from the quick and well prepared Phoenix Suns.
Although the Spurs are strong playoffs contender and not a rebuilding team (but sooner or later they will be), I think they need to augment their line up, starting this summer. Tim Duncan and Antonio McDyess are not getting any younger and their bench needs more depth to enable them to contend for an NBA title in the years to come. Free agency and trading players might to do the trick for them. They can use Manu Ginobili or Tony Parker as trade bait to acquire young yet talented players, this is one of the ways to keep them going, as they cannot rely on their draft pick.

Hey there! My home team is the Detroit Pistons and what is happening in San Antonio is similar to what happened to the Pistons. Players like Isaiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, Bill Laimbeer, Dennis Rodman either grew old and just a little slower or were traded without getting the needed value in return. They were replaced with William Bedford an extremely talented big man that did have attention disorder, Lindsay Hunter and Allan Houston who left Detroit as a free agent.

I see the same thing happening in San Antonio to the Spurs. Duncan is getting older and starting to fade, but is still very talented. It's just that age catches up with all of us. Parker hasn't been the same since getting injured and married. Ginobili seems to be a little less than himself. I would have expected a better showing from them after the free agent signings they made, but it didn't pan out. Maybe the pieces just didn't fit.

Chris Bosh would be a help, but you can only play so many people at the Power forward slot and it appears they have a few that fit that mold already. Who is ready to take over at the point? I don't even know if Duncan really mans the center position any longer. I believe Antonio McDyess was starting there and that is out of position for him. The way it looks to me is that they need either a couple big free agent signings or big draft. I am not sure of the value of the players they currently have on the open market.
