What's more important to you, job security or personal health?

Tip for best answer: M$1.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Funny you should ask, I just made that decision.

Health.

I am under doctor's advice to find a different job, my work in life insurance claims has taken a massive toll on my stress levels, and after a heart attack scare I am working with my boss and HR to see if they can fit me in to something else within the company. . . If not I may be out of work.

Theoretically, it's always a case of "health is wealth", but that's not how it plays out in reality. When confronted with the risk of losing their job, home, and, yes, health from lack of work, it may be wiser to pick a more secure but less healthy job. Also, many risky jobs have far higher pay scales than the safe ones, which can mean early retirement if the money is saved and invested wisely. Mixing good pay plus job security makes taking an unhealthy job for a little while an attractive proposition for those who are more worried about survival over general health.

I know this sound corny, but when you have your health, you really do have it all. There are many people, young and old, with health issues and life is no treat for them. They would gladly trade whatever treasure they have for good health. There is no security if your health is not good.

Reading your question makes me think that you have a risky job. I don't know why. Anyway, for me personal health is, of course, more important. If a person has good health, he can do well in his job. This will help him achieve good relationship with his co-workers. He will display a cheerful disposition while at work. And whenever he faces work-related challenges, he may respond to it well and display good decision-making ability. Everyone will notice it, including those in higher positions than him. And maybe, or probably, he will be given better opportunities because of his attitude towards his job. This will lead to job security.

Health.
as in, "oh, yay, I got a great job with this company injecting poison into the groundwater in order to extract natural gas.... too bad the pay and benefits don't even begin to cover the cost of treatments now that the whole family has cancer of one type or another... and oh yeah, I'm too sick to get up and go to work now anyway... but it sure is great that the drilling companies came in to provide so many great jobs in the region, isn't it?"

Personal health absolutely trumps job security! Because no matter how secure your job seems to be, if your health goes too far down you will still loose that job! Or if allow a "secure" job to kill you prematurely that's no better.

Most people can retrain, reinvent and get new jobs so I would never but a single employer above my health and well being, there are millions of employers in the world and I can apply at any one of them. I only get one me and you only get one you, so take care of you!
