What's it really like to live off the grid?
I've spoken to a friend who only got solar power and is not connected to the national electricity grid. Is it all the same or different to live with solar power only? Is it really the future? Where can I find a website where people talk about their personal experiences with solar power?

First, living off the power gird is very different than living off the grid as the broad term refers to shirking all forms of current convention and making yourself fairly untraceable. it is becoming increasingly more difficult to do.
Living on just solar power is not that different than living off the standardized power grid as you can still run a television, computer, etc. the biggest difference is that you are going to be limited by the amount of power you can store. Most people who choose to go to a solar power situation also run a back-up gasoline generator for times when they might be low on power. In recent years there have been much better power saving tools, allowing you to store up solar energy for times when there is less sun power available.
Another big difference will be your change in thinking when it comes to power. You will find yourself making choices about what things that require power are most important to you. If you can afford one of the newest solar power set-ups the claim is it will be just as normal. Most people seem to agree, but there are still limitations. Solarcity.com and solarhome.org are both great resources to find out information on solar power. Both host forums where people discuss what it is like to live on solar power.
