What's Invisible Children and "The Rescue"?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Invisible Children is an organization that began when three young men from San Diego traveled to Africa and discovered that a great injustice was taking place in Uganda. A war has been raging for over two decades between the government of Uganda and a rebel group called the Lord's Resistance Army. The LRA is led by a man named Joseph Kony, who for decades has been abducting local children and forcing them to fight for his army. Invisible Children is dedicated to raising awareness about this issue, encouraging the world's governments to take action and allowing the "invisible children" to come home.

The Rescue is an event taking place this Saturday, April 25. In 100 cities around the world, people will "abduct" themselves and peacefully march to a specific location in each city. These people will stay at this location until a celebrity, politician or other "mogul" shows up with media coverage to "rescue" them. The idea is that once this story gets all over the news, Americans and others around the world will be unable to ignore the plight of the abducted Ugandan children.

You can watch a 36-minute film about the crisis, see a map of events and read up on the entire plan here: http://therescue.invisiblechildren.com/en/

You can also see videos of attendees on YouTube asking for people of influence to come to The Rescue: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=&search_query=come+to+the+rescue

Invisible Children is affiliated with Causecast and all of us here will be attending the Los Angeles rescue: http://www.causecast.org/org/invisible-children

The background:
Joseph Kony indicted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity. The ceasefire has been called between LRA and Ugandan Government. However, this does not proceed smoothly as Kony refuses to sign the final peace agreement.

In 2008, the Ugandan government launched a military operation to defeat the LRA and caputre their leader. The LRA fought back by attacking thousand of civilians, and abducting hundreds of children.

Many of them are taken to be porters to carry what the rebels loot. Boys are then forced to become fighters. The girls become sex slaves for the commanders.

From the Huffington Post

It's a worldwide rally scheduled on April 25th in 100 cities across 10 countries.

How it works or get involved?

Participants will 'abduct themselves' on behalf of abducted child soldiers. Each city will be 'rescued' by a prominent political or cultural figure who attends the event and makes a statement on behalf of the child soldiers. Confirmed rescuers include Pete Wentz, Kirsten Dunst, Kristen Bell, Switchfoot, and Paramore among others.

The rally demands the world leaders to

make the conflict a visible priority and put an end to the longest-running war in Africa.
