What's in sangria?

What exactly is Sangria, and what's in it? I know there's red wine and fruit, but what kinds or types of each? What are the best ways to make sangria at home?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Sangria is a fruit punch customarily served in Portugal or Spain. It's a combination of wine and fruit served over ice. The basic recipe for Sangria is:

~quote~
"* 1 Bottle of red wine
* 1 Lemon cut into wedges
* 1 Orange cut into wedges
* 2 Tbsp sugar
* 1 Shot brandy
* 2 Cups ginger ale or club soda

Preparation:
Pour wine in the pitcher and squeeze the juice wedges from the lemon and orange into the wine. Toss in the fruit wedges (leaving out seeds if possible) and add sugar and brandy. Chill overnight. Add ginger ale or club soda just before serving." ~end quote~http://wine.about.com/od/redwines/r/basicSangria.htm

Other fruits, like strawberries, kiwis, peaches, or berries can be added. And if you'd like to give it a little "kick," you can add a few shots of gin, vodka, or rum. Orange juice can be added to cut down on the amount of sugar that's added. Honey is also a great alternative.

Some of the red wines that you can use are: Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Zinfandel, Merlot or Shiraz.

Sangria is easy to make, and looks inviting when served in a punch bowl with plenty of ice, and floating fruit. {There's something about seeing fruit floating that makes people think that it looks "healthy").
