What's Hawaii like?

We live in the central area of Maui. This is the big vegetable and herb growing area. To the east in Haiku there is almost too much rain to grow vegetables, but it is a great area for horses, cattle and sheep. Coconuts and other palms do not grow well above 2000 ft, but coffee does well.
Crime. We have crime similar to other places in the US. The more dense the population (Honolulu) the more crime. Break ins of tourist cars is bad on all the islands. I would not walk down the beach after dark except for maybe Molokai. Molokai is the most restful island because there is nothing to do there, and you can see everything in one day, maybe two. Same for Oahu as far as the scenery. Maui and Kauai would take a few days. The Big Island would take longer. Kauai has the only rivers to speak of.
Cost of Living. It's atrocious. It depends on the area. A shack in the Kapalua area will cost several million dollars. A three bedroom house down at South Point on the Big Island runs about $400,000. Presently, next to my wifes school, there are three bedroom two bath homes on 3,000 sq ft lots for $400,000. A gallon of milk is about $5. Gas is about $3.75 gal. Taxes are not too bad compared to other states.
The people. This is a mutiracial state. There are more interracial families here than there are single race families. Racism exists and for a long time it was denied, but as the number of interracial families grows racism is finding stony soil. This is a liberal area in many ways but there are strong currents of conservatism also, especially among the Native Hawaiian people. The legislature is almost all Democrat, but Republicans are regularly elected to county offices. The outgoing governor is a Republican.
Is this Paradise? I am often asked this question. It is certainly better than many places. The weather for the most part is often wonderful. It certainly has been that way this entire year so far. But my answer is that Paradise is where the one that you love is. So yes, for me, this is Paradise.
Where I live.

M$They were filming Five-0 today, down by the old post office. Last week they did a scattering of ashes in Waimea Bay. I wonder why they film here?

M$If you're visiting, Hawaii is a great place to get a tan. I've been to Waikiki beach and it was a great place to hangout and enjoy the water. If you're willing to spend more money, Hawaii has a lot of beach resorts.
If you are moving to Hawaii, you're job/business prospects would be mainly tourism, health care and the military. You also have to prepare for a higher cost of living like paying $6.50 for a gallon of milk (as of 2008).
All in all, Hawaii is a great place to be.

If I were to pick a spot on the islands to live both my wife and I like the flavor of the Kula area.
