What's exactly is simple syrup?

I see this listed in a lot of drink recipes. Is this something you buy or is it just sugar and water?

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Simple syrup is a mix of sugar and water that's been heated to fully dissolve the sugar. Using it accomplishes two goals--it that ensures the sugar will fully incorporate into the beverage, and it also produces a sweeter result than if you just put the same amount of sugar and liquid into your drink. The additional sweetness occurs because, when you heat the water, more sugar can be incorporated in the solution. The same amount of sugar in cold water would leave some undissolved at the bottom of your drink.

Its commonly used in mixed drinks, but also makes a great lemonade.

You can make it at home, or purchase it in a liquor store. Mahalo has two pages with instructions on how to make it simple syrup:

Simple syrup is equal parts sugar and water, boiled until the sugar dissolves.

It's used in tons of cooking applications and for mixing drinks.

There is also gomme syrup. From Wikipedia:

Gomme syrup is an ingredient commonly used in mixed drinks. It is also commonly used as a sweetener for ice coffee in Japan. Like bar syrups, it is a sugar and water mixture, but has an added ingredient of gum arabic which acts as an emulsifier. Gomme syrup is made with the highest percentage of sugar to water possible, while the gum arabic prevents the sugar from crystallizing and adds a smooth texture.
To make gomme syrup, bring sugar and water to a boil, then add gum powder dissolved in water. Strain for use.

Here is the recipe I found on allrecipes.com. I'm sure you can buy this, but it also looks really easy to make. Just sugar and water.

Simple syrup or Sugar syrup is basically 2 parts sugar and 1 part water boiled then cooled. It's not really something you can buy because it's rather simple to make. It's use to sweeten different kinds of cocktails. Here is a basic simple syrup recipe,

1 cup water
2 cups white sugar

Put all of the above ingredients in a pot and boil till all the sugar is disolve. Let it cool before using.
