What's a spirograph? Has it got anything to do with geometry?
I've seen a spirograph at a friend's house. Is that just a toy or can one actually do something with it? Would it be a suitable educational Christmas gift for a child? Is there somewhere online where I can try out a virtual spirograph?

I used to love Spirograph when I was a kid! It is definitely more than just a toy, however.
According to Wikipedia.com:
"Spirograph is a geometric drawing toy that produces mathematical curves of the variety technically known as hypotrochoids and epitrochoids. The term has also been used to describe a variety of software applications that display similar curves, and applied to the class of curves that can be produced with the drawing equipment (so in this sense it may be regarded as a synonym of hypotrochoid). The name is a registered trademark of Hasbro, Inc."
This would be a great educational gift for a kid (or adult) who is interested in geometry, art, or some combination of the two. You may be better off trying to find the "original" Spirograph (the one from 30 years ago) on EBay or someplace similar, since the current version has generated some very negative feedback online.

There is a Java applet you can use to create a virtual Spirograph:

Hope this helps! Have fun making interesting shapes!
