What's a good iPod alternative, based on functionality?

I am looking for 4-8G. The top criteria are:

1. user interface - it has to be as easy to use as the iPod
2. durability - I want to use it at the gym)
3. bluetooth
Tip for best answer: M$2.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Have a look at Samsung P2 8 GB Touchscreen Bluetooth Portable Media ($154.97 from Amazon + shipping). The touchscreen might not be good requirement number 2 - durability.

I was looking at this one as a gift but in the end purchased Samsung Q1 ( $123.41 from Amazon + shipping) instead as the person does not need the bluetooth.

Key features of Samsung P2:
- Built-in Bluetooth 2.0: compatible with Bluetooth headphones and speakers for wireless stereo playback
- 3-inch widescreen LCD with touchscreen controls
- FM radio, text viewer, alarm clock, world clock, and calendar
- Windows XP and Windows Vista compatible

Excellent link, Rob, thanks. It confirms what I had head from Paul Thurotte (sp?) and what RayShaw says below about the Zune. In the end I am going for the P2. I bought a little S3, which is fantastic.

Everyone jokes about the Zune, but reviews show the interface to be as good or better than iPod, and it does offer wireless features that iPod did not until the iPod Touch came out. Personally, I quit using an iPod when I got a Blackberry cell phone (Pearl). It's proven to be very durable and even has iTunes compatibility. Plus it's very light and thin.

I agree. I use my blackberry 8800 as an MP3 player as well.

The biggest problem with any phone as an mp3 player is the limited storage. Having a lot of room to store all of your audio has quite a few advantages.

Still, my blackberry does a very good job of letting me listen to audio books.
