What's a good firm cake that doesn't taste dry?
I'm making my son a caterpillar birthday cake using a bundt cake pan and I think a firmer cake would likely be easier to work with, but I hate how most firm cakes have a dry texture. Do you know of any cake recipes that are firmer but remain moist and delicious?

What an adorable cake! I am not sure if it would work for a caterpillar cake or not, but you might try it out. Pound cakes are firm and moist, and they taste really good too. Even 7-up cake is a pretty firm and very moist cake. I am not sure how it would taste with the combination of that frosting. You could use a regular pound cake.
1 cup of shortening
1/2 teaspoon of salt
6 large eggs
2 cups of NOT self rising flour
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
1 teaspoons of almond extract

Cream sugar and shortening making sure it is well creamed. Add 3 eggs, one at a time, mixing well. Combine flour and salt. Add one cup of flour and then add other 3 eggs, one at a time. Add other cup of flour and mix well. Add flavoring and pour batter into a greased, but not floured, tube pan. Bake for 1 hour at 325
