Greetings,
Temple University was originally founded by Dr. Russell Conwell in 1884. Originally it was known as Temple College and did not become a University until 1907. Dr. Conwell, a civil war veteran, studied at Yale before earning his law degree from Albany Law School. He was the pastor of Grace Baptist Church before being elected Temples first president, a position that he held until his death in 1925. By 1888 the college had enrolled 600 students, and offered night classes in ministry, business, law, medicine, education and other common professions of the time. Tuition was originally free and there were no admissions requirements as the institution was seen as a form of public service. In 1891, the college charter was altered to award academic degrees, and the first graduates were certified that same year. The first graduate degree was offered in 1904 in the department of Theology. The addition of a law, medical, and dental school led to the revision of Temple's institutional classification status and incorporation to a University in 1907.
