President Jimmy Carter commuted his sentence (originally 20 years) to a sentence of 8 years on April 12th 1977 "in the interest of equity and fairness based on a comparison of Mr. Liddy's sentence with those of all others convicted in Watergate related prosecutions". He still had to pay his $40,000 in fines, but ended up serving less than 5 years and was released on September 7, 1977.
