What would you say to someone of the opinion that the only thing required from a doctor by their patient is expertise of their field?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

There are two other things I can think of that are important in a doctor. The first is the doctor's personality and how people react to the doctor will differ from person to perosn. If you aren't comfortable talking to your doctor, despite him or her being the most brilliant doctor in the world, you won't want to tell him your problems and therefore get help. Another side to this is how the doctor treats you when you try to tell him or her your problems. If the doctor tunes you out or dismisses your symptoms because he thinks you are a hypochondriac then you will have a difficult time getting helped by him or her. Also, the doctor may just rush you along to get you in and out because they have too many patients to see.

That last point brings me to my next issue, which is the doctor's office. Sometimes the staff are incompetent or the office is not run well. I have been to an office that was run like a car factory. I felt like I was on the assembly line and the doctor didn't much care what happened. I left that practice because of that feeling and the fact that I had to fight for my referrals to get done. Most often you deal with the doctor on a limited basis and deal with the support staff more. If they aren't doing their jobs, that will make your life just as unpleasant.

I would remind them that all doctors no matter how much of an expert in their field they are they have large amounts of malpractice insurance. Doctors are humans, and as such they are prone to error as well as EGO.

A doctors to be effective as a healer must be able to listen and communicate with their patients. Not all patients are the same and as such some require extra assistance in understanding and possibly appreciating the advice and instructions given by the doctor. In other words the patient must listen and understand the doctor and if all the doctor had was an expertise in their field, they would not be very good communicators, listeners, or human beings.

Thank you.. I am trying to prove to my friend that there is more to a good doctor than knowledge, perhaps I did not phrase the question well. Any other points, from you or others?
