1. No need to cut down forests for book paper.
2. No need to carry bulky text books to school.
3. No need for expensive public libraries and bookstores.
It will take time for its full impact to be felt, but it can be huge.
I'd also suggest that some small energy patent that no one knows about yet, like algae-based fuel, could be the greatest invention, but it will take time to fully comprehend its impact.

I agree smart phones are wonderful, but do they they really count as an invention? Or, rather, aren't they a highly innovative convergence of previously existing technologies?
The transistor is a great invention because it is the basis of much of modern electronics and that includes cell phones and computers, but it is much older than 5 years.
I guess my idea of an invention is something that did not exist before that causes a technological revolution, like the transistor (or Visicalc for that matter). The personal computer revolution arguably was launched by this application - there was no widespread consumer interest in 'micro' computers before Visicalc.
Besides, the smartphone (at least according to this wikipedia entry) was invented in 1992. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smartphone
