I think there are a few things that I would suggest figuring out before looking for ear buds. I speak from personal experience since I was in the market for ear buds a few months ago.
A few month's ago, my music player's stock earbuds broke on me. Sound was no longer coming through one of the ears and the other ear had sketchy consistency at best. I decided that I needed new earbuds and promptly went to various sites to look for them. (I'm in Canada)
www.bestbuy.com
www.futureshop.com
www.tigerdirect.com
www.ncix.com
Those are a few of the electronic places I looked at to compare earbuds. I work out at the gym and I wanted a set of earbuds that were sturdy for me. I had also been infatuated with noise isolation / noise canceling and wanted earbuds that could do something along those lines.
I'd definitely recommend trying out earbuds before fully diving into purchasing an earbud - unfortunately, if you're looking for high end earbuds, you won't find a lot at the electronic stores (or at least I didn't). The first one I tried was a Bose earbud - definitely a really good earbud (its Bose right?) and it fits in the ear nicely, has nice sound and such. I'm not an audiophile but maybe you are and that's something that's important for you.
I eventually chose a shure se110 - the price was around 75 (taxes and everything) on tigerdirect . They're noise isolating (so they have foams around the earbuds that fit into your ears and block out outside noise) and it has a nice carrying case and really sturdy cables. Honestly, they're not the best earbuds if you're looking more for sound but I thought it would be a good way to 'start' my way into the world of earbuds.
So to sum up, some things to consider:
Price range / Budget
Sound quality
Bass
Sturdiness / Warranty of Earbuds
Where are you going to use them? Gym? Bus? Leisurely walking around?
Check out some of the sites I've posted below on some reviews on CNET. I'm also going to list some of the common high end earbud manufacturers:
Klipsch <- my friend swears by these ones, best sound and he knows his stuff
Shure
Sennheiser
Bose
I hope all that helps you!
