What would YOU like to know about the 2010 Health Care bill?

These days finding objective and unbiased sources of information is harder than finding oil. Tell me what you would like to know about the Health Care & Education Affordability Reconciliation Act of 2010 so I can help turn it into a respectable and non-political page where ANYONE can find factual information about the bill. Already in the works are a full timeline of when various provisions are set to take effect, links to applets that will help you calculate exactly what the effect on your family will be, and continuing coverage of any updates or alterations. For current reference you can see the page as it is now here: http://www.mahalo.com/health-care-education-affordability-reconciliation-act-of-2010 And please folks, lets keep it non-political. We all have very strong feelings about these issues, and that's why everyone should have someplace they can trust to provide the facts and ONLY the facts.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The summaries all say companies with more than 50 employees must provide health insurance coverage. Is it defined how much coverage they must provide?

I have health care coverage myself but I am interested because I have adult children who could use coverage.

That's a good question, I've even dug through the bills themselves a bit and not found a number listed anywhere. Presumably this falls under some confluence of existing regulations about what constitutes insurance vs a joke. I'll keep looking though!

What impact does this have on self employed freelancers if anything?

The only mention of self-employed individuals I've found is to say they aren't excluded from the same things every other standard individual get.

How much will the fine be for those who elect not to purchase health care insurance?

That is, in fact, the very first thing in the list about the bill's most important provisions: 2.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income.

I'm trying to shore up any gaps to make Mahalo's page the go-to webpage for accurate factual information about the bill's provisions. Is there something it does not cover regarding the bill that you would want to know?

Catemars if you would actually read my question through you would see quite clearly that I'm talking about Mahalo's own page on the bill, and that the link to the page is right in it. Either way here it is again: http://www.mahalo.com/health-care-education-affordability-reconciliation-act-of-2010

To continue with this line: it's not your income that's fined but your AGI. Adjusted Gross Income is a different number, it's the one you see on your taxes after your tax people do everything they can to reduce it usually by a pretty hefty chunk.

Also remember this doesn't occur in a vacuum, there are also significant changes to make it cheaper to get insurance than incur the fine, and many of these provisions will take effect slowly over the next 4 to 8 years.

As a matter of fact I do, the Fast Facts on the right links to the bill's text itself, as well as an automatic "how will this affect me" calculator.

You're saying that the fine for not buying into the health insurance plan is 2.5% of my income? I find that hard to believe, but then again, I haven't done any research on it yet. Please do provide a link on the page to this detail if you find one. Thanks!

You're right. I hadn't taken the time to read your question thoroughly. Thanks for taking the time to provide an answer. I've since looked at your page and it's quite good, but I'm still curious - do you have any links to an actual bill (not an article about the bill, but the bill itself).

I want to know if it lays out a plan on how long they will let someone get away with not paying the fine at tax time before they will enforce it in some way. Also in what way will they enforce it. Will they garnish wages over it like with other non tax payed things?

As near as I can find that's nothing special and treated as with any other fine: being handed off to the usual channels. So I would assume this is basically unanswerable as they would come at every case differently, just like nonpayment of taxes.
