Sit him down, and tell him what you saw. Ask him if it's true, and how he feels about his feelings. Give him a hug and let him know that you love him know matter what, and then just talk. He may have questions. You probably have questions.
But remember that if he hasn't told you yet that means he's expecting an unsupportive reaction. Prove him wrong. Prove that you're an amazing parent who will love your child no matter what. After all, this IS still your son, the same boy you've always known and loved. And he shouldn't have to hide major parts of his life from you.
Whatever your feelings about this news, please don't think that it's best to keep the secret in the dark. Maybe, just maybe, your son, on some level, left that IM message up on purpose so you'd find it. Maybe he's tired of hiding.

I suggest if you have a problem with your son being a gay then you should resolve this issue before you talk to him.
Never EVER send him for gay recovery program to "cure" him.
