What would happen if antibiotics did not work?

It was reported recently in the news that antibiotic resistant superbugs are moving from India and Pakistan to the US carrying the NDM-1 gene mutation. The gene is found on plasmids, which are small bits of DNA, allowing the resistance to jump from one bacterial strain to another. Antibiotics started coming into wide spread use at the end of WWII. Would we go back to how medicine was practiced in the old days? What can we expect to happen in the future as more and more bacteria become resistant to the strongest antibiotics?

The rate of deaths would have increased and the population would have decrease and people might have concentrated on the ways to improve the immunity and resistance to various diseases.
