Tinnitus, or ringing in the ears can be caused by many things- ear infection, fluid in the ears, medications, aging, and trauma. Treatment depends on what the cause may be, although in many cases there is no specific treatment. Sometimes it just simply goes away. You can read more information about tinnitus here
http://www.medicinenet.com/tinnitus/article.htm
You will need to see your doctor for an exam and testing to determine the exact cause as the treatment that is prescribed depends on the cause.

There are several conditions that can cause ringing in the ear, commonly referred to as vertigo. Middle ear infections and fluid behind the eardrum are usually the most typical but other health conditions can cause this. Those with high blood pressure, anxiety or panic attacks, and similar conditions may report this symptom. Fluid behind the eardrum results in disequilibrium, hence the ringing or roaring. However, there are numerous reasons that this can be caused by conditions. It may be hard to pin point any one particular cause.

This could be a sign of hearing loss. I encourage everyone to practice hearing conservation as much as possible. Check out the links below.

Many people experience an occasional ringing (or roaring, hissing, buzzing, or tinkling) in their ears. The sound usually lasts only a few minutes. Ringing in the ears that does not get better or go away is called tinnitus. You may hear a sound, such as a ringing or roaring, that does not come from your surroundings (nobody else can hear it). The sound may keep time with your heartbeat, it may keep pace with your breathing, it may be constant, or it may come and go. Tinnitus is most common in people older than age 40. Men have problems with tinnitus more often than women.
