What would be the advantage of switching political parties to Independent?

Assuming you are talking about U.S. politics:
That's a pretty tough question. I think the advantage of becoming independent is lending support to the idea that the "two party system" is broken and needs to be replaced. This is something I strongly believe in.
The problem is, as far as I can tell, all of the independent candidates so far are either crazy or no where near my personal beliefs on the kind of changes I think need to happen.
So for the time being, I would say the advantages of switching to independent are severely limited.
But if a few valid candidates were to come along as independents, I would say the advantages would be supporting the real kind of changes needed in politics, and perhaps leading to "ideas&ideals before talking points" for once in American politics.
