What would be appropriate gifts that a college student who is going to study in Japan for a semester in Nagoya should bring with them

to give to hosts and peers for their hospitality?

She has received such gifts from other foreign exchange students as have I when they have visited my home. What says American that is classy, acceptable, easy to pack and preferably not made in China.
Tip for best answer: M$1.00

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

That can be a very difficult question to answer!

My first suggestion would be to look for something unique to her hometown city or state.

Things like sweets or candies that are unique to that area would be highest on the list, but they can be a pain to travel with depending on the item.

Or any type of local hand-made crafts.

Something from a local sports team is also good: keychains, hats, pens, etc.
T-shirts too, but may be hard to get the right size.

When I first came to Japan, my gift for my future father in law was a set of golf balls. So if they play golf, that is an excellent item. (He later brought the half empty box back to show me he had used them.. and sunk most into the water trap)

If I think of anything else, I will post them in the comments.

If you don't mind I will be reposting this question to the general public to see if anything else shakes out on this question. Though If we were already thinking the same direction as you have I doubt anything else is going to come of it.

We were kinda thinking about art notecards that were created by some local artists? some have some real local corn flair to them :)
