What would be a good choice for tile?

Remodeling a master bathroom, and looking for a choice of tile that is: 12x12" and 6x6" with decorative tiles and matching or coordinating chair rail, affordable, won't go out of style, ceramic or porcelain. Goes in shower, around jacuzzi, and perimeter of rest of bathroom. Recommended vendor also needed.

Just to be helpful, not for the tip :) :

A good tip for avoiding things going out of style:
"colors" that belong on a color wheel in art class can go out of style. Earth tones don't really go out of style. Avoid pure white and black, and avoid orange, yellow, green, and purple. Avoid grays (even in marble) except MAYBE for earthy grays that look more brownish/reddish/tanish because they get really dreary and annoying time. You can risk blue, but make sure it's as close to a shade of sky blue as possible. Every other blue (royal blue for example) will get annoying to your eyes. And sky blue is easier to match with earth tones.

That's a tough call because ceramic and porcelain are re-formed relatively cheaply into styles that come and go. If you go for a finer grade of material like marble you're probably in better company for things unlikely to go out of style.

Ceramic tiles are a good choice for tiles. Ceramic tiles are made from earthenware and porcelain. These tiles can be used in different applications such as flooring, countertops, roofing, walls, and showers. These tiles are available in numerous styles and shapes including square, octagonal, rectangular, or triangular. Tiles are extremely durable.

Consider Chinese black or cream marble, usually cheap at the home depot. It looks good, very classy and it is often on sale at $2 a tile. That would allow you to put a bit of money in your chair rail with a contrasting white or lime porcelain knotted rail, Italian style and paint your doors and windows the color of the rail.

Answer: When you are choosing tile for your bathroom, consider the following:
1. Use ceramic tiles because they are durable, highly resistant to harbouring germs, easy to keep clean and come in a variety of styles to suit every taste.
2. Be careful about the texture of the tiles.
3. White is a good color for tiles due to its fresh, classic look and its capacity to reflect light to give the illusion of a more spacious, lighter room.
4. The size of the tiles depends on the size of the bathroom; the more compact the bathroom, the smaller the tiles should be.

Make sure that you choose a very strong, hard tile - porcelain is very good. Consider that most of the cost of tile installation is the labor, and if you want it to last for a long time, pay the extra cost for good tile. Even the expensive cutting equipment for hard tiles can be rented, and will be worthwhile in the long run.

A tan/brown/gray type of tile will almost always be best, with similar grout. Remember that you don't want to have to clean your floors every day, just because the odd color of tile (white or black) makes the floors look extremely dirty.
