What will it take for Soccer (Football) to become popular in the United States?

Soccer is the most popular sport in the World and one of the only sports with a true world championship. However, it is still considered a second rate sport in the United States

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Truly? I don't think we've ever really tried.
I am a huge baseball fan-I love the players, I love the stories, I love the myths, and I know them like the back of my hand.
I know from reading the work of intelligent men like Nick Hornby that soccer has just as much lore, wisdom, and strategy as baseball-but it is seldom presented to Americans.
If ESPN showed Premier League soccer, every day, taking the time to dumb it down like the postseason announcers do in baseball, with maybe a highlights show or some documentaries in between, they could easily grow a US soccer audience.
But they'll never do it, because it wouldn't work right away, and they'd give up on it.

Time for commercials.

This is the main reason soccer will never make it here on TV, and if you can't make it on TV, then you can't make it. (Supposedly) If you can't inject commercials, you can't make money...

Oh... and without commercials you can't go to the bathroom. Us Yanks need to drain our collective bladders.

This is a great question. I was just in Mexico watching some youngsters kicking around a soccer ball and was amazed at what they could do. I then went to my hotel room and tried watching soccer and was totally bored by it. I think the lack of scoring is why I don't watch it more. The other two answers are right on about TV and sponsorship. It's not a good TV sport and in america......

Yes! Hockey seemed to get into the problem of low scoring. The NHL recently changed some of the rules and rink... now scores are higher (and play faster). Makes for more interesting games IMHO.

To have soccer as popular as it is in other countries american football would have to no longer exist. The reason why soccer is so popular over seas is because its a sport that doesnt cost a whole lot of money. No need for equipment other than a ball.

American football is far more popular in the U.S. than soccer.

It's big business. Corporate sponsorships, players seeking big salaries in the NFL, clothing and logo fees, all these factor in to market share that soccer will probably have a hard time penetrating.
