M$I would think that the first mechanical device for the purpose of creating heat must have been the bellows. Ovens would have been created earlier, but they are not mechanical. Right? Today's equivalent must be a bellows in a steel furnace
What about a piece of glass? If you focus it, you will create heat. Not really mechanical though.
