You're probably thinking of the mosquito ring tone. It's a sound that's usually around 17 kilohertz. As we age, we lose the ability to hear high pitched noises. This tone is high enough that most people over the age of 30 can't hear it, but children hear it just fine. It was originally used in a device called the Mosquito to repel loitering teenage hooligans in the UK, but kids have since realized that it makes a good secret ring tone (since their teachers and parents can't usually hear it).
