NOTE: Some of my advice is not appropriate for pre-teen models but even pre-teen models grow up. This information is useful for various age groups.

Find a successful model in your area and see if they will mentor you.

Modeling schools are a waste of money since they'll accept anyone that can pay whether or not you stand a chance succeeding in the industry. Classes for children are different because you don't know how someone will look or how tall they will be when they grow up. The discipline may help or hurt them. Never put your own desires for your child model before their health and well being.

Find out what type of model you'd be successful at. In the USA at least, if you're not over 5' 7" tall you will never earn much money as a runway model. But you may be the right size/age for catalog work or children's fashion.

If you don't know how to read the lights and look good in every pose and expression, if you go anywhere in this industry it will take a long time to get there. Some people are natural, but the skill can be learned. Find someone who is an expert in lighting to teach you. Find an acting coach to learn expressions and poses.

Find a good photographer in your area and ask if you can test with them. If you have some talent, find a photographer that specializes in creating portfolios for new models and spend a portion of the money you'd have wasted on modeling school to pay for great prints instead.

If you're at least 16 (I think), you can sign up on sites like http://modelmayhem.com and get a small idea of what that part of the industry is like. But it's only a small sampling. Opportunities in your area (location or specialization) will likely differ.

--------------------
Skip this part if you're not at least 18 years of age (the standard age for nude work the USA):

Nude models (not Adult Industry models) are more flexible in their requirements. Even 300lb persons can be successful models for the right artists (like Leonard Nimoy's recent art show reveals). But unless you have natural talent (it's more than sitting around naked in front of a camera), you'll never make the $200 - $500/hr that professional art nude models make. There are highly successful nude models that train new models. If this is an interest of yours, you should find one and spend your money learning from the best. They'll be more likely to be honest with you up front and not take your money if they don't think you'd be successful - unless you insist.

As with anything you do in this life, consider the ramifications of your choices up front. Never pose nude if posing nude will interfere with your long term goals, jobs, affiliations or interests.
----------------------------

Always read the modeling agreement before you sign. If you don't agree with what you see written, don't sign it and find another photographer to work with or to hire. Always get it in writing. Verbal contracts are useless as the photographer will win by default if there's a dispute.

A great photographer can get great images of you in spite of your skill or look. Great photographers are not cheap or free. Some are good that are, but the best rarely work for free. If you work with a "free" photographer make sure you get in touch with models that have worked with them before and check their references.

Modeling and photography is a business just like any other. If you're not being treated respectfully and without harassment you've found the wrong person to work with and you should leave immediately.

Never waste your time getting pictures taken by a photographer that is unable to produce a quality image (without the use of Photoshop). You're only as good as your last picture and if that picture sucks or is over-Photoshopped, you will have wasted your time and become less appealing to others to work with.

Every photographer you work with should be at least as good (but hopefully better) than the last one you worked with. If you find you're unable to work with anyone better yet, you need to work at becoming better until you can. That will be your best gauge of your talent.

I wish you the best of luck in your pursuit of the craft!

well to become a model i think, its start from within, feel beautiful to look beautiful.... and next is discipline... it comes from many things like... eat the right food, sleep early, dont smoke, dont drink to much.. drink plenty of water and exercise.. when you do all of that your definitely become beautiful... its just a basic regimen... next is knowledge... you should know what your doing, study modelling... right pose, right angle.. mood.. scenery... etc... all about modelling it includes fashion and make up.. and lastly priority... aim for what you want... if you want to be a model, feel it... learn it... and achieve it....
