William Shakespeare was a master of understanding the human psyche. He took ordinary men and women and made them come alive through exploring their motivations and sometimes their deepest darkest secrets. Not only did he create memorable tragic heroes such as Macbeth, Hamlet, and Romeo and Juliet, but he let us look into their hearts and their passions by amplifying their emotions and behaviors.

Shakespeare wrote his tragedies, comedies, and histories at a time when he was competing against rowdy activities such as a c**k fight right down the street. His audience was rough and tough and somewhat dirty-minded, if you will. His writings are full of remarks that would have had hilarious sexual connotations to the people of that day. In a way, we might compare him to a modern day sitcom writer. The difference lies in his ability to create larger-than-life characters that have never stopped captivating those who enjoy Elizabethan drama at its best.

Shakespeare made an indelible mark in the world of drama and stage. He developed what is known as the sonnet, which is a fourteen line stanza that rhymes and at the same time tells a story. To date, no one has ever been quite able to be as effective as he in developing such a unique manner of storytelling. Additionally, Shakespeare provided the foundation for many twists on stories through his famous works including Romeo and Juliet, Much Ado about Nothing, Hamlet, Macbeth, and King Lear. For example, the idea that murder stains the hand or the phrase “blood on your hands” comes from the play Macbeth and corresponds to the action when Lady Macbeth kills someone and sees their blood on her hands. The idea of star-crossed lovers who can never be together unless tragedy happens is from the play Romeo and Juliet. Meyer’s series Twilight is based upon this same principal of a vampire and a mortal girl who can never be together unless she dies and enters his world. Long live Shakespeare.

William Shakespeare’s contribution does not simply relate to the drama world. Certainly, he is the greatest, most prolific playwright ever. Even though other playwrights may have created more works, none of the will ever compare with his ideas.
Harold Bloom, perhaps the foremost literary critic in all of America just now, says it this way: “Shakespeare invented human nature.” That is about as high praise as could be offered. Of course, he does not mean that humans were not acting according to their own nature before Shakespeare came along with his quill and ink well. He simply recognized that there is a natural way that we all respond to the real dramas in our lives. He showed that nature by coming up with ways he could help us understand. If he had not shown us, some other writer may have. But he did SHOW us. For that, his contribution cannot be overemphasized.
