What was the worst ending to a long-running TV series?

Tip for best answer: M$0.24
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Oh this HAS to be the Sopranos. I mean you gotta watch it. You'll be like "Wait what just happened? Is my TV Okay?"

Now I don't want to hype it up or be too harsh, but its as if all of a sudden I just

I totally agree. I LOVED The Sopranos and this was just a horrible way to end this wonderful series. I HATE not get closure.

Umm, drmatt? That's not how Seinfeld ended.

I mean, granted, it was stupid. But it ended with them all sitting in jail. And Jerry did a stand-up routine from prison.

Then... where did I see the getting off the subway scene? Is that my own creation?

I was never really into Seinfeld so I don't really know why you picked it! A little bit of an explanation would be nice. :)

Yeah... I was looking for a clip, but couldn't find one.

All four characters get out of a subway train, awkwardly say goodbye, and then go their separate ways.

Yup... that's it. And that was after a (for me) boring episode where they are stuck in a little town where their Big City ways clash. zzzzzz

They are left in prison and Jerry does stand up.

I'm not a big Seinfeld fan... I remember the ending was the subway scene.

Zena Warrior Princess.

Worst Ending Ever

*Spoiler*
Goes to Japan and willingly gets decapitated to fight a ghost.

She decides to stay dead to atone for setting a fire in a drunken rage that spread through a village killing 40,000 people.

It was poorly written, not in keeping with the feel of the series, and it killed any hope of a happy ending or movie spin off.

A fun series that forgets to be fun in the final act.

The worst ending to a long running television series was the last show of Charmed. Charmed was a pretty good action adventure show for those of us who enjoyed the paranormal scene. It ran with a long storyline, but combined it with enough action adventure to keep you entertained. However, over the many years that it ran, its characters evolved slowly and viewers knew exactly what the goals and needs of each of the characters were.

However, in the show's finale, I guess the producers just said, "Oops." They pretty much packed the entire history of Charmed into one short season ending; they didn't even bother to add an extra hour to the show. Its ending note was pretty much: "Wham, bam, thank you, ma'am."

Would agree that Seinfeld is in the top running; after self-centered, ignorant and hilarious encounters over the run of the series each of the people they had "wronged" in some way came back to condemn Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer. (Was this also the episode that ran in reverse time?)

Also ridiculous (and I am dating myself) was the finale to the long-running series, Dallas. A very loose take on "It's a Wonderful Life" with Joel Grey as the angel-slash-devil showing the scheming, manipulative JR how life might have been had he never been born (answer: a whole lot better for a lot of people). In the final scene, a maniacal Joel Grey urges JR to pull the trigger. We hear a gun shot and brother Bobby Ewing runs to the door. We do not see whether JR has actually shot himself or if he lives or dies.

It was a cheap and pathetic end to a slightly classier and long-running dramatic series loved by many.

Newhart. Bob Newhart's later series, in which he runs a small inn, ended with him waking up next to his costar wife from his other self titled series. The producers decided it would be funny to act as if the second show had all been a long dream (nightmare?) for his previous character.

I wonder how Larry, Daryl, and Daryl felt about that.

Oh, that's funny. I haven't looked at the best endings because I'm afraid I might run into a Lost spoiler I don't want to read (I'm only on season 5 via Hulu).

I was too young to have watched the original, but I loved his second show and looked forward to it every week. The ending, of course, made not sense to me, and when my mother explained it, I was pretty annoyed. :)

People are being pretty good about posting spoiler warnings.

But I understand where you're coming from in avoiding spoilers. I'm being careful with one or two of the shows that have been mentioned and which I've not seen yet.

It wasn't the last show or even close to it, but many people say that the long-running TV series Happy Days would have stayed on the air for a long long time if not for the dreadful episode where Fonzie "jumped the shark" in the fifth season. While the series went on for a few more years after that, it just wasn't the same. Even the phrase "jumping the shark" has become a term to signify a point in a show where its popularity reaches its peak.

Although I haven't seen it from what I hear it could be LOST. I hear people complaining it left more questions than it settled. But then I didn't watch the series either.

Nah, it ended well. A few questions left but nothing that you need to know. If they answered EVERYTHING, it would be just too much anyways.
Even the actors on that one thought it would take a couple days to think over and most people would come out satisfied. I know I was.
