Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The Buggles was the first band to air on MTV on August 1, 1981. Their song 'Video Killed the Radio Star' was the first music video to air. Fitting huh? The song hit the #1 charts in the U.K. in 1979, the same year the band formed after a 2 year acquaintance. The band featured Trevor Horn, vocalist and bassist and Geoff Downes, keyboardist. The band was considered electro-pop.

The other songs that aired that day in order:

1. Video Killed the Radio Star - The Buggles
2. You Better Run - Pat Benatar
3. She Won't Dance With Me - Rod Stewart
4. You Better You Bet - The Who
5. Little Suzi's on the Up - Ph.D
6. We Don't Talk Anymore - Cliff Richard
7. Brass in Pocket - The Pretenders
8. Time Heals - Todd Rundgren
9. Take It On the Run - REO Speedwagon
10. Rockin' the Paradise - Styx

62 songs aired that day

The very first song aired on MTV on August 1, 1981 was entitled "Video Killed the Radio Star". This is a British synthpop and new wave group who called themselves "The Bugles". They released their debut single last September 7, 1979 on Island Records in celebration of the golden days of radio. The song is about a singer whose career is cut short by television. This song topped the music chart in several countries and has been covered too by many recording artists. This was the first music video shown on MTV in North America.

The song was composed by Horn, Geoff Downes and Bruce Wooley. Horn claimed that Woolley was primarily responsible for the musical content of the song while Horn wrote the lyrics. Woolley added the words 'put the blame on VTR'. The first version was recorded by Woolley and the Camera Club and became a hit in Canada. The Bugles later recorded the song and topped in the UK charts in the week of ]October 20 1979. This was the first ever number one for the Island Records label. It also topped the Australian charts and made it to the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States debuting on November 10, 1979 and peaked at number 40.
