What was the very first punk band that came out?

My wife and I are really in to punk music, and underground music as well. My wife and I were just talking and just started wondering exactly how many people actually knew who the very first punk band or punk artist was that came out and created the path for punk music? Please give the name and the date they became known!

You obviously have a particular band/performer and date in mind, and I'm not sure my answer will satisfy you, but I've been a punk fan since the mid 70's and just getting a chance to answer an interesting question about Punk is pretty cool.

When I came along, Ramones, New York Dolls, and Sex Pistols were already established and we were about to get into Black Flag and X, among others. At that time I would have said that Iggy Pop and the Stooges or Velvet Underground with Lou Reed or Nico would have been in the running for the first Punk band,
but a few years later while listening to the Dead Kennedys, somebody mentioned to me how much "Kill the Poor" reminded them of The Fugs on "Kill for Peace".

My response was "who the fug are The Fugs"? Well, happens dude had some of their music and knew a bit about them. You can look them up on the internet (how "un-punkish"!), and you will find that Ed Sanders, Tuli Kupferberg, and Ken Weaver (The Fugs), played for the first time on February 24, 1965 at the opening of Sanders' bookstore/lounge.

Here's one of my favorites, hope you enjoy:

Thanks bunny, living in Michigan and South Carolina, I was pretty far from the center of anything, but we took our music seriously and it's good to know the what we were experiencing has somewhat of a ring of legitimacy to it. I'll never forget the dark little clubs and the wild nights of debauchery, angst, and soul cleansing howling at the moon, so to speak. It was remarkably cathartic and I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for Punk, strange as that may sound.

I would second that answer. As a kid who grew up in the early punk rock scene in San Francisco and knew half of the people you mentioned... I'd say you tagged the 'roots' of punk quite well. Of course it's not just one band or a first song. As with any new branch of music, there's a birthing process. I also believe that the 'Underground', Lou Reed and Iggy were the perfect breeding ground.
