The first Harry Potter book was published June 30, 1997 and final installment was published July 21, 2007. All told it took just a little over 10 years for the seven books to be released to the public. Part of the speed had to do with the first three books being complete by the time the publishing began. The later books took more time as they were still be written by JK Rowling as the other novels were gaining recognition.
The final installment of the movie is due out in July of 2011. Likely the full set of DVDs will be released as a package set around Thanksgiving in time for the holiday sales season. All of the DVDs are currently available, as of 2010 with the exception of The Deathly Hallows, Part 1.
