The medicine man was a spiritual leader of the tribe. Ancient people thought many illnesses, mental illnesses, famines or other misfortune were caused by spirits and could be healed if spirits looked favorably upon them. The medicine man appealed to the spirits for help on behalf of the individual or community, often through the use of hallucinogenic plants and ritual ceremonies.

They also knew how to use native plants to cure common conditions like nausea, headache and infections. So the medicine man was both--doctor as well as spiritual leader.

Many cultures have medicine men but call them by other names, shaman, healer, witch doctor.
