What was the real story behind the "War Games" movie?

What was the real world event that inspired the movie, "War Games"?
Tip for best answer: M$0.62
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The most appropriate incident is when a student hacked ARPANET (pentagon) in early 80s. It was in early 80s that Kevin Mitnick achieved his major coup, a truly impressive hack. At that time he was a student at the University of South California. Using one of the machines at the university, probably a TRS-80 equipped with a Zilog processor at 1.77 MHz, Mitnick gained access to ARPANet, the ancestor of the Internet, which was then reserved for the Army, large corporations and universities.

There wasn't a real event that inspired War Games, much like The Hunt For Red October, its just a story. The 'real stories' never got made into films.

Your wrong.

There was an accidental missile launch in the 1970s. The error was detected and the missile self destructed.

I expect better research before awarding your best answer.
