What was the price of a pack of cigarettes in 1980?

Searching brings up answers from 35 - 68 cents, but that doesn't seem correct. Is there a chart anywhere showing average retail price per pack over the last several decades?
Tip for best answer: M$2.75
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

It was certainly much cheaper than today, if you adjust the prices you found to inflation they will seem much more reasonable. The graph from Center for Disease Control and Prevention, cdc.gov seems to confirm your findings.

--quote--
In 1970
Average cost per pack was $0.38
Average tax per pack was $0.18
Tax as a percentage of retail price (on the average) was 46.9%
In 2000
Average cost per pack was $3.16
Average tax per pack was $0.76
Tax as a percentage of retail price (on the average) was 23.4%
--/quote--

An article from the NY Times states that the 1980 price of a pack was $0.63 and that between 1980 and 1990 alone the price of a pack increased by almost 155%.

Interesting, it seems to be quite a spread. But I appreciate you great statistical finds!

I just found another source, a PPT from a Ph.D. at University of Illinois at Chicago, which depicts the real price (adjusted to inflation) of a pack of cigarettes on several slides. The price is given as about $1.30.

It depends on where you live. I know that a pack of cigarettes was (and probably still is) much cheaper in the rural areas of I-95 North Carolina. My Grandfather used to have my uncle buy him a case (not just a carton, a case) when he'd drive through there on his way from Wilmington, DE to FL.

I started smoking in 1983 or 1984. The price for a pack of Marlboro reds on the Eastern Shore of MD at that time was about $0.85.
I convinced myself that when it went to $1.00 I'd quit, but it took me a little longer- 2001 at around $2.50 per pack in the Norfolk, VA area.

And yes, I still get strong cravings sometimes even 8 years later.

Since I am a Non-smoker, I am unable to share the actual price of 1980s based on my own experience.

Anyhow I will provide you by searching based on some nice link..
