What was the price of a pack of cigarettes in 1980?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

M$I started smoking in 1983 or 1984. The price for a pack of Marlboro reds on the Eastern Shore of MD at that time was about $0.85.
I convinced myself that when it went to $1.00 I'd quit, but it took me a little longer- 2001 at around $2.50 per pack in the Norfolk, VA area.
And yes, I still get strong cravings sometimes even 8 years later.

Interesting, it seems to be quite a spread. But I appreciate you great statistical finds!
I just found another source, a PPT from a Ph.D. at University of Illinois at Chicago, which depicts the real price (adjusted to inflation) of a pack of cigarettes on several slides. The price is given as about $1.30.
