This is an interesting question and can lead to much debate. I have been a fan of Major League Baseball since 1977 and know about players from past eras, and seems that many of the greatest of all time did play during the 1950's. Having said that, I think there is more depth in the game today but also more second rate players that would not have made teams in the 1950's simply due to the fact there were less teams at that time.
In 1955, for example, there were only 16 teams in Major League Baseball. Today there are 16 teams in the National League alone and 14 more teams in the American League. With nearly double the players it was harder to get into Major League Baseball in past years.
If you look at some of the greatest players of all time, you can look at the 1950's and rattle off names such as Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Duke Snider, Warren Spahn, Jackie Robinson, Gil Hodges, Stan Musial, Ted Williams, Al Kaline, Eddie Mathews, Hank Aaron, Robin Roberts and the list goes on and on.
There are great players in today's era too, but more players that would be relegated to the minor leagues had they played in the 1950's
