What was the last REALLY GOOD book you read?

Tip for best answer: M$2.37
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I really enjoyed WWGD? (what would google do?) by Jeff Jarvis. I'm sure you were looking for a novel or something generally non-fiction perhaps, but this is a great book for 'wrapping your head' around the 2.0 world. It touches upon open-source, business transparency, quality content generation, etc. If you work with or within the online world in any way, you will learn a great deal from this book.

On a slightly "cheesier" note, I really like Mitch Albom novels - like Five People You Meet in Heaven, or Tuesday's with Morrie. They are beautiful stories, quick reads, and leave you with a good feeling inside when you're done with them. A generally upbeat and positive read in an often hectic and overstressed world, I'd say :-)

The last book I read is Sophie Kinsella's Twenties Girl. The story is nice but if you're not into that kind of funny romance story, then for sure you won't enjoy it...

So I guess the REALLY GOOD book I last read was Mitch Albom's For One More Day.

Mitch Albom's books make you realize the importance of some things we usually neglect... and in this book, it tells a story of a son who didn't really value his mother that much... but lucky for him cause he was given a chance to understand everything.

Not many of us have that chance so let's value the people around us before they're gone.

Hi @fallen_angel21 - I said the same thing about Mitch Albom in my review above. That guy just really has a way of putting things in perspective :-)

I really like his books. :) I haven't read his new book though... the one titled Have a Little Faith. But I'll grab a copy as soon as I can. Have you read that one?

There are a few:

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
In the Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco (the second time I read it, I was too young when I first picked it up)
Io Uccido (I kill) by Giorgio Falletti
and I did enjoy the Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown

Literally the last really good book I read...

I just finished Lord of the Rings. Again.

I read it every few years or so, sometimes more often.

I can't imagine that anyone needs being told what it is these days, but in case you do, just click the in-link for the Mahalo page.

EDIT:

I see you already commented on the featured video, so you definitely don't need to be told what it is! :)

Tokyo Underworld by Robert Whiting.

It's a book specifically about an American who built a pizza business in Tokyo post WWII into what is today the Roppongi entertainment district.

But more generally, it is about how Japan developed into the economic powerhouse of the 80s and 90s with a little help from it's "underworld" friends.

There are many entertaining side stories (how and why pro wrestling became popular in Japan, how the tech industry of Japan was helped along by the US government, etc.)

It's an entertaining book.

I throughly enjoyed the Camel Club by David Balducci. It is one of those books that you find interesting characters intertwining with a good plot and plenty of conflict. I don't want to give much of it away in case someone is reading it right now.....

I also just reread the Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. This book captured hope, desperation, and trying to retain one's dignity during the Great Depression. It is a true classic in my world.

I am currently reading under the Dome by Stephen King. It's very good. I have been reading his books since the late 70's and this one is old style King. I am very much enjoying it.

The last really good book I read is also, coincidentally, the last book I've read. I try to only read good books. It was The Wastelands, 3rd book in the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. I highly recommend the series. Without giving too much away, while reading, you will continue to question whether the world they are in is actually our world, but in the future, where the world has decayed and moved on.

America: The Last Best Hope (Vol I & II) William J. Bennett

These two books take the reader through the history of America from the first discovery until 1989. These are not dense history texts, but are written in an easy to read style that is quite entertaining.

It is according to what genre you are looking for. Sci-fi, the runelords series by David Farland. Before that was the Darksword Trilogy by Margarette Weiss.

I recently re-read Flower for Algernon, it is a science fiction written by Daniel Keyes.

The story is about Charlie Gordon, who has an IQ of 68. His life changed when he get picked for experimental surgery which triple his IQ. However, the surgery has side effects that could kill Charlie.

With his triple IQ, Charlie start to live a new life - he met his girl friend, and work as professor in uni. As he found out the side effect of the surgery, he started to work on perfecting the surgery and a cure.

Very interesting read, a timeless literature work (easy to read too) as the book was published about 40 years ago.

"The Unfolding of Language," by Guy Deutscher.
http://robburke.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/deutscher.jpg

It's a non-fiction book about how language has changed since we humans first started creating language, why we have irregularities in language, and where our structures (grammar, nouns, verbs, etc.) came from.

The book's site: http://www.unfoldingoflanguage.com

Perhaps that's not your cup of tea, but it was a good book to me! :)
