What was the last novel you read? What got you to read it (word of mouth, an ad, a review, luck)?

Islandia by Austan Tappan Wright. It was a reread for me, number 4 or 5 I believe. It's a large read I like to undertake every couple of years. It's like I get the Islandia itch and I've just got to go and read it.
The characters are wonderfully real and it's a compelling story that deals with the question of the benefit of modern culture in a natural progression that focuses on understanding fully the aspects of two cultures in contrast with one another.
I first head of Islandia in a book of essays by Ursula K. LeGuin in which she praised the novel. I adore LeGuin's body of work and sought out something so highly recommended right away.
