The geography and climate in the Middle East during biblical times were similar to what one can see today, generally speaking. With regards to the geography in particular, the maritime plain along the Mediterranean coast was a trade route. Above the coastal plain in the southwest were the lowland areas, with little hills and mountains. Political control of it alternated between Israel and the Philistines. North of this place and ending in the South was the central Plateau or Ridge, the backbone of the land. It was on these roads where the locals traveled back and forth. The Jordan valley is located 600 feet below sea level and it exited to the Sea of Galilee at this point, connecting over 1300 feet below with the Dead Sea.
