It was first celebrated in 1919 as Armistice Day. Later changed by Dwight Eisenhower to "Veterans Day."
---quote---
In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

The first year it was officially celebrated as Veterans Day was 1954, President Eisenhower passed legislation for celebration on June 1, 1954 for a day to honor servicemen who were veterans of all wars, which included WWI, WWII and the Korean War. It originally was observed first on November 11, 1918 to honor end of WWI and was called Armistice Day. In 1938, as a result of legislature, November 11, was established as a day to honor world peace and only the veterans of WWI. President Gerald Ford passed legislation on September 20, 1975 to permanently establish Nov 11, as a national day to honor honorably discharged military veterans after its change to the first Monday in October was rejected by many citizens. Today, it is celebrated on Friday if November 11 falls on a Saturday, and on Monday if November 11 falls on a Sunday.
