After a number of other acts of aggression, for example in Austria and Czechoslovakia, when Poland appeared to be next in line, Britain and France signed a treaty with Poland that they would come to its defense if attacked.
When Germany invaded Poland on Sept 1st 1939, probably believing that the British would back down again as they had done on previous occasions, Britain and France issued an ultimatum that if the Germans did not withdraw, they would declare war. The Germans didn't do that, so Britain and France declared war on Sept 3rd, 1939.
This is normally considered the start of the Second World War.
Btw, as a matter of terminology, it's more correct to say "Britain" or "the UK" than "England". Also saying Britain "entered" the war suggests WW2 had already started before then, but most people define Britain and France's declaration of war as the start.
