The Lady of the lake was Sir Lancelot's foster-mother. She was probably raising him after she gave the sword to King Arthur and then she sent him to become a knight.
She was killed by Sir Balin, after King Arthur broke Excalibur. She demanded King Arthur to kill Sir Balin to repay the favor, but Sir Balin killed her instead.
