Starting 1930, for nearly a decade, severe drought caused frequent dust storms to blow around the Southern Plains in the center of the US. These storms made things such as breathing, eating, enjoying a walk or even sitting on your porch, difficult propositions. Houses filled with the dust, crops were blown away, and in general the economic effects of the Great Depression were exacerbated for much of the middle of the country. See e.g. http://www.english.illinois.edu/Maps/depression/dustbowl.htm and http://www.livinghistoryfarm.org/farminginthe30s/water_02.html for map, time-line, and more details.
