Copernicus was a big contributor in the Scientific Revolution of the 1500's, he helped change the world's perception of an Earth-centered universe, where God or something moved the sun, moon and stars across the sky, to a Heliocentric universe, in which the planets revolved around the sun.
Apparently there was not as much reluctance to believe this as the media portrays, when the Pope at the time was first relayed this information, the church was interested in the theory and gave the explainer a small gift.
His contribution wasn't as controversial, because the idea had already been bridged by Ptolemy in the 2nd century AD, who believed the heavenly bodies moved at Equant circles around a central point that was not the Earth. Copernicus simply moved the center point to the Sun, and made the circles more uniform.
