The French and Indian War was expensive for Britain. To recoup their losses in the war the British began to tax the colonies in America heavily. The British were also concerned over the increasing independence of the American colonies. In 1765 they created the Stamp Act and The Townsend Acts. These acts infuriated the American Colonies and led to the Boston Massacre in 1769 where British soldiers killed 5 colonists in Boston Massachusetts.
Colonists refused to pay these new taxes and the British began to build their forces in New York and Boston to deal with the growing protest. On December 16, 1773 a protest crowd of around 7000 people began to gather in Boston Harbor. About two hundred men some dressed as Native Americans descended on three ships in Boston Harbor and dumped their load of tea into the water. This event is called the Boston Tea Party and was a spark that led to the American Revolutionary War or The War of Independence.
