What was Obama thinking when he appointed Van Jones, and does this appointment reflect poorly on Obama's judgment?

Perhaps you think it was a good nomination? Please note that the question is about Obama's judgment concerning his nomination of Van Jones, not everyone's opinion of the hundreds of bad nominations that past presidents have surely made. I want to know what you think of THIS ONE. Thanks!

It was a reasonable appointment. Jones has a very good record of promoting and organizing Green causes and wrote a very well regarded book on the subject of Green economic growth. Unfortunately anyone reaching a high level in politics is under the microscope for all past public comments and has to consistently speak in a politically correct manner. I don't think his resigning will help much because he was actually quite correct in calling the Republicans "assholes" even though it was not a conventional or polite thing to say. So the Republicans will attack someone else in the administration with or without reason; and, the amount of virulent verbiage they produce will stay the same.

(please note that it is Van Jones not Von Jones so that people can google for themselves more easily.)

The Republican efforts have been long term and persistent. Van Jones' remarks were from an environmentalist meeting before he was appointed to his White House position. There is a difference of scale. Also, a simple schoolyard insult isn't the same as the continual misinformation and absurd comparisons to Nazi and Communist regimes. The administration are only Democrats, and not even all that liberal.

Thanks for your answer and thanks for the spell correction, I made the change in my question.
To be clear, you seem to say Van's virulent verbiage was correct, but the Republicans are wrong in theirs? Don't you think both sides could tone it down a bit? Just curious.
