I think you are talking about Sholay (Flames) released in 1975. Sholay is the highest grossing film of all time in Indian cinema. The movie has earned Rs. 768,81,00,000, equivalent to US$ 160 million, after adjusting for inflation. When first released, the film was declared a commercial disaster. Word of mouth convinced movie-goers to give the film a chance and soon it became a box-office phenomenon. It ran for 286 weeks straight (more than five years) in one Mumbai theatre, the Minerva. Sholay racked up a still-standing record of 60 golden jubilees (50 consecutive weeks) across India and doubled its original gross over reruns during the late 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. Sholay was the first film in the history of Indian cinema to celebrate a silver jubilee (25 weeks) at over a hundred theaters across India.

We can connect Sholay movie with the epic Ramayana. Ravana equals Gabbar Singh, Veeru with Rama and Jai with Lakshmana. In the epic brotherly affection was expressed and in the movie the friendship was expressed. That's all the difference. The coin concept is purely mythological concepts. The deities concept has spread all over India in all villages especially.
I read the reference to Dharmendra and Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) in the movie summary. Will you explain the deities?
Was the movie popular because of the friendship and then a final tradegy? How did the movie connect with the deity mythology?
Everyone should be devious like that villain!...LOL..
The acting was considered excellent by Amitabh Bachchan, the best ever. What was the actors career?
The villain was very devious
Quote
Sholay is essentially a film about failure and loss. The failure of law and order leads to the attendant human losses: the loss of heirs, the loss of arms, the loss of comrades and the loss of dreams. Veeru's failure to recognise Jai's intentions amounts to a tragic betrayal in which both the friends participate. Perhaps subliminally Veeru knows that it is not Gabbar alone who engineers Jai's death. His own ignorance and facetious trust lead directly to the fatal encounter between Jai and the dacoits.

How is the law at keeping order and securing personal liberties and property in India?
Sholay has inspired many imitations, in cinema and television, and has spawned a whole sub-genre of films, the "Curry Western", which is a play on the term Spaghetti Western. None of them has had the success of the original film. Sholay is also considered the most important of the early Masala films, which popularized this genre in India.
Hogan's heroes has a story in the period of World War II. Other than this Sholay and Hogan's heroes have the same type of storyline. We can equal Veeru (Dharmendra) and Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) characters in Flames to the character Hogan and his prison crew in the Hogan's heroes and Colonel Klink to Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan).
