M$1 Answer
Radioactivity is a property of metals to release particles from the nuclei of their atoms into the air. The particles of those metals are released in somewhat predictable patterns. A few metals can do this on their own (uranium). Some metals have been manufactured to do this (polonium).

Radioactive decay is the process by which an unstable atomic nucleus loses energy by emitting ionizing particles (ionizing radiation).

Madame Marie Curie and other scientists discovered that radioactive metals are somewhat unstable. Their nuclei have too many particles. The extra ones go flying off in waves as described above. This can be a useful property, but only when it’s carefully controlled.
Radioactive particles can cause cancer and other types of radiation poisoning. Radioactive materials, when used and handled carefully, form the basis of nuclear medicine. Nuclear energy plants also produce radioactive waste when they split or combine atoms to produce energy.
